At the meeting in Tokyo, Prime Minister Takayama emphasized the crucial role of the International Energy Agency (IEA) and thanked Executive Director Birol for his support and advice on Japan's energy policy formulation.

Fatiheh Birol, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, met with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda in Tokyo today to discuss the impact of the Middle East war on energy security in Asia and other regions, as well as the historic measures taken by the International Energy Agency to release emergency oil reserves in response to market fluctuations.

During the meeting, Dr. Birol thanked Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi for his significant support in releasing approximately 400 million barrels of collective oil reserves by IEA member countries. This release was the largest in history and was announced on March 11th.

Although the impact is global, the most severe effects are currently in the Asia-Pacific region, which is the destination for the majority of fuel exports from the Middle East.

Both sides agreed that Japan and the IEA would continue to closely cooperate to further strengthen the current energy crisis.

They also talked about the long-term impact of the crisis on energy security.
