According to the official announcement, the Ashton mine is currently facing numerous technical challenges and risks related to safe production and operation. Coupled with the pressure on the medium- and long-term coal market, these factors will continue to negatively impact the operating efficiency of the coal mine. The announcement states that the combination of multiple negative factors has made it impossible for the mine to maintain long-term sustainable production and operation.

矿井关停将分多阶段落地，首先缩减开拓、掘进配套工程，2027 年初完成全部开拓采矿作业，2028 年初全面结束长壁回采生产。

The closure of the mine will be implemented in multiple stages. Firstly, the expansion and excavation supporting projects will be reduced. By the beginning of 2027, all the expansion and mining operations will be completed. By the beginning of 2028, the longwall mining production will be fully terminated.

澳洲矿业与能源工会(MEU)表示，该公告发布后，60个岗位将立即面临风险。兖煤澳洲称现阶段首要工作是妥善安置全体员工及其家属，公司将与受影响职工深度对接，尽可能提供内部转岗渠道，同步配套职业转型辅导、心理健康帮扶等保障服务。

The Australian Mining and Energy Union (MEU) stated that after the announcement was made, 60 positions would immediately face risks. Yanzhou Coal Australia said that the top priority at present is to properly accommodate all employees and their families. The company will closely collaborate with the affected workers and provide as many internal job transfer channels as possible. At the same time, it will also offer support services such as career transition guidance and mental health assistance.

This underground coking coal mine is located in Camberwell, north of Singleton. It produces coking coal specifically for steel smelting. The majority of the coal is transported overseas via the Port of Newcastle. Williams demands that Yancoal Australia be honest and proactive in communicating with the employees, providing job training and transfer opportunities, and informing of the layoff plan in advance in accordance with regulations.
