Global liquefied natural gas trade has reached an all-time high, and the industry has demonstrated resilience in the face of geopolitical turmoil.

The 2026 edition of the "World LNG Report" by the International Gas Union (IGU) was recently released. The report indicates that despite the unprecedented market turmoil, the volume of liquefied natural gas trade has set a new record, investment has approached historical levels, and the long-term growth prospects are strong.

2025年全球液化天然气(LNG)贸易创下4.37亿吨的新高，增长6.3%，为2022年以来最强劲增长，新LNG供应投资激增至六年来最高水平。贸易增长得益于美国、卡塔尔及其他生产国不断扩大的供应，而加拿大和毛里塔尼亚/塞内加尔首次加入液化天然气出口国行列。

In 2025, global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade reached a new high of 437 million tons, increasing by 6.3%, marking the strongest growth since 2022. Investment in new LNG supply soared to its highest level in six years. The growth in trade was attributed to the expanding supply from countries such as the United States, Qatar, and others, while Canada and Mauritania/Senegal joined the ranks of LNG exporters for the first time.

The 2026 World LNG Report also highlights a significant wave of investment confidence in the industry. In 2025, final investment decisions were made for 68.4 million tons per year (Mtpa) of liquefaction capacity, making it the strongest year for project approvals since 2019. Over a five-year investment cycle, a total of 206 million tons of new capacity was approved.

The ability to change the flow of goods, the utilization of the continuously growing spot market, and the exploitation of the increasingly mobile trading hubs have helped to curb the impact of supply disruptions and maintain energy supply to the consumer market. The report concludes that although the LNG industry also faces challenges in an era of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, its unique ability to redistribute a large amount of clean-burning energy from an expanding supply base further enhances the role of LNG as an "impact absorber" for the global economy.

The liquefaction capacity being constructed and approved for development globally is expected to drive a significant increase in supply by the end of this decade, helping to meet the growing demand of mature and emerging economies.
