As tensions in the Middle East intensified, causing concerns among the market about long-term disruptions to supply and the levels of winter fuel stocks, European gas prices rose to their highest level since the end of 2022 on Thursday.

Although European gas prices are still far below the peak levels seen during the 2022 energy crisis, they have more than doubled compared to pre-war levels, adding further resistance to the region's economy as winter approaches.

The tightening of global gas supply will increase the necessity for Europe and other regions to compete for supplies. As heating demand begins to rise, prices are likely to increase further.

The similar futures in the UK rose by 3.8% to 205.22 pence per pound and briefly reached their highest level since December 2022.
