BEIJING, March 15th - The Japanese government is scheduled to release its oil reserves starting from the 16th, aiming to alleviate the rising oil prices caused by the tense situation in the Middle East. The total amount to be released is approximately 80 million barrels, equivalent to 45 days' supply for Japan. This is the largest release since the country established its national oil reserve system in 1978.

Japan's oil reserves consist of both private reserves and national reserves. As of December 2025, Japan's national oil reserves can sustain the country for 146 days, while private reserves can sustain for 101 days. Since the national oil reserves need to be transported from the reserve bases to the refineries, which takes a relatively long time, the Japanese government has decided to utilize the private reserves first.

According to the plan released by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, the government will require private sectors such as oil refineries to release 15 days' worth of private oil reserves starting from the 16th, and then release 30 days' worth of national oil reserves from late March to early April.

Due to the obstruction of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the gasoline prices in Japan have soared recently, as Japan heavily relies on oil imports from the Middle East. The Japanese government plans to resume providing price subsidies to oil wholesalers on the 19th, in an attempt to stabilize oil prices.
