Thanks to the shale revolution, the United States has become a significant source of global oil and gas supply, achieving remarkable success. Recently, countries such as Argentina, Turkey, and Australia have also been accelerating their shale exploration and have successively made breakthroughs. The global shale oil and gas competition has now fully commenced.

Market experts say that the success of the US shale oil and gas industry has its unique factors. Wood Mackenzie recently released a report analyzing the core advantages of the US shale oil and gas industry and the key reasons why it is difficult to replicate in other regions. Experts pointed out that the US shale industry is composed of hundreds of small independent companies, which are willing to devote all their resources to securing a place in the shale market; the rapid iteration and large-scale application of hydraulic fracturing technology provide technical support for the growth of shale oil and gas production; a complete midstream pipeline network, sufficient capital acquisition channels, an active merger and acquisition market, and relatively favorable tax and financial systems jointly constitute the ecosystem for the success of the US shale industry.

Unlike the situation in Middle Eastern countries where state-owned oil companies dominate, the decentralized and highly competitive market structure in the United States has given rise to a continuous driving force for technological innovation, resulting in a continuous decline in drilling cycles and unit costs. Currently, the United States remains the benchmark for global shale development, while other countries are attempting to find breakthrough paths within their respective geological conditions and policy environments.

Among the numerous competitors, the Vaca Muerta formation in Argentina is recognized as the second-largest shale oil and gas accumulation area in the world, only after the Permian Basin in the United States. After a slow start in the previous years, Vaca Muerta has become a hotspot for global drilling activities.

The data shows that the crude oil production in this region exceeded 800,000 barrels per day by the beginning of 2026. Industry and analysts predict that by the end of 2030 or even earlier, this shale area in Argentina will achieve a crude oil production of 1 million barrels per day, along with abundant natural gas.

This growth is attributed to the incentive policies introduced by the Argentine government, which include offering more favorable exchange rates and export tax rebates for shale development projects, attracting a large amount of international capital to flow in. Doug Lawler, the president and CEO of Continental Resources, believes that Vaca Muerta is one of the most attractive shale areas in the world.

Turkey is also another key region. Continental Resources recently signed two exploration agreements in Turkey, one in the Diyarbakir Basin in the southeast and the other in the Thrace Basin in the northwest.

The initial assessment indicates that the ultimate recoverable resources in the Diarbekir Basin could amount to 6 billion barrels of oil and 12 to 20 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, while the Thrace Basin may contain 20 to 45 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The Turkish government is actively promoting the energy independence strategy, attracting foreign technical partners through simplifying licensing procedures and providing tax incentives, in order to accelerate the commercialization process of local shale resources.

In addition, the Bitlau Basin in Australia is also regarded as one of the largest shale gas reservoirs in the world. The Northern Territory government report estimates that the discovered and potential resources exceed 500 trillion cubic feet. In the Middle East, Saudi Aramco is focusing on the huge Jafurah unconventional gas field to increase natural gas production. Although the United Arab Emirates is known for its conventional resources, EOG Resources began drilling in the country last year, indicating that it has considerable shale oil and gas reserves.

Europe is an exception among global shale competitions for several reasons: The EU is known for its strict regulations, and many governments have imposed moratoriums or outright bans on shale drilling due to concerns over climate change. However, the most fundamental reason is that Europe lacks sufficient commercially viable recoverable shale resources on a large scale, making exploration and development economically unviable.

Overall, although it is extremely difficult to replicate the US shale revolution precisely, many countries and regions are exploring development paths for unconventional resources based on their own conditions. The global shale race has fully commenced. Currently, there are slight signs of decline in US shale production.

After multiple rounds of industry consolidation and the impact of oil price fluctuations, most small independent shale producers have been acquired by large enterprises. The shortcomings of the shale industry, such as its high sensitivity to prices, bottlenecks in efficiency improvement and single-well production growth, have been exposed. With the continuous advancement of technology and policy support, the shale production in non-US regions is expected to achieve significant growth in the next decade, which will gradually change the global oil and gas supply pattern and reduce reliance on traditional oil-producing regions.
