The research team of solvated styrene-butadiene rubber at the Petrochemical Research Institute has always been guided by national strategies and the urgent needs of the industry. Starting from the efforts of the older generation of experts, and then being succeeded by the younger and middle-aged key personnel, they have steadfastly held onto the position of independent innovation for decades. Through countless experiments and process iterations, the team successfully completed the entire chain of solvated styrene-butadiene rubber (SSBR) from laboratory small-scale tests, medium-scale tests to industrial-scale production facilities of one thousand tons.


从联合独山子石化开发出国内首个高苯乙烯含量双端基官能化溶聚丁苯橡胶SSBR3540F、制备的轮胎首次达到欧盟轮胎标签法规双A等级,到支撑国内单线产能最大、以官能化牌号为主的广西石化12万吨/年SSBR装置一次开车成功,团队推动我国首套拥有自主知识产权的溶聚丁苯橡胶成套技术顺利落地。这彻底打破了国际巨头长达数十年的技术垄断,有力保障了我国高端轮胎关键材料技术及产品的自主可控,用实干担当诠释了石油科技工作者的使命与情怀。

From the development of the first high-styrene-content dual-terminal-functionalized sol-gel butadiene-styrene rubber (SSBR) 3540F in the Jiusan County Petrochemical Joint Venture, to the first time that the tires produced reached the double A grade of the EU tire label regulations, and to the successful one-time start-up of the 120,000-ton/year SSBR unit in Guangxi Petrochemical, which is the largest single-line production capacity in China and mainly uses functionalized grades, the team has successfully implemented the first set of sol-gel butadiene-styrene rubber complete technology with independent intellectual property rights in China. This completely broke the technological monopoly of international giants that had lasted for decades, effectively guaranteed the independent control of key materials technology and products for high-end tires in China, and with practical actions, interpreted the mission and sentiment of petroleum scientists.


SSBR是高性能绿色轮胎的“芯片级”材料,而官能化SSBR的核心改性技术,长期被国外严密封锁,供应链时刻面临断供风险。官能化反应如同分子尺度的精细“刺绣”,国外对核心工艺高度保密,可参考的文献寥寥无几,攻坚之路举步维艰。

SSBR is the "chip-level" material for high-performance green tires. The core modification technology of functionalized SSBR has long been strictly guarded by foreign countries, and the supply chain is constantly at risk of being cut off. The functionalization reaction is like a meticulous "embroidery" at the molecular scale. The core process is highly confidential by foreign countries, and there are very few reference materials available. The path to breakthroughs is extremely difficult.


石油化工研究院兰州化工研究中心副主任张华强和专家董静深耕该领域多年,成为攻坚的核心力量。张华强潜心钻研国外文献,试图从只言片语中反推聚合机理,笔记本上画满了密密麻麻的分子结构图,一有思路就立刻与团队探讨、反复试验。官能化中试运行期间,董静连续多日值守中试装置,在反应釜前一守就是12小时。他的手机相册里,存着儿子备战高考的复习资料,彼时他正攻坚双端官能化技术。

Zhang Huaqiang, the deputy director of the Lanzhou Chemical Research Center of the Petrochemical Research Institute, and Dong Jing, an expert, have been deeply engaged in this field for many years and have become the core force in tackling the challenges. Zhang Huaqiang devoted himself to studying foreign literature, attempting to infer the polymerization mechanism from fragmented information. His notebook was filled with dense molecular structure diagrams. Whenever he had an idea, he would immediately discuss it with the team and conduct repeated experiments. During the pilot production of functionalization, Dong Jing stayed at the pilot plant for several consecutive days, standing by the reaction vessel for 12 hours at a time. In his mobile phone album, there are his son's review materials for the college entrance examination. At that time, he was working on the dual-terminal functionalization technology.


技术突破后,从实验室到工艺包开发,又是一次艰难跨越。项目负责人李福崇为人素来温和,在技术上却寸步不让。为确定一个阀门选型,他与设计院同事争论得面红耳赤,凭着这份较真,团队用一个月填平了实验室与施工蓝图的鸿沟。2023年,12万吨/年SSBR成套技术通过审查,具备“交钥匙”能力,曾经的争论,都化作了对技术的敬意。

After the technological breakthrough, the transition from laboratory to process package development was another arduous leap. Project leader Li Fuchong was always gentle in character, but when it came to technology, he wouldn't budge an inch. To determine a valve type, he argued heatedly with his colleagues from the design institute. With this meticulousness, the team filled the gap between the laboratory and the construction blueprint within one month. In 2023, the 120,000-ton/year SSBR complete technology passed the review and had the ability to provide "turnkey" services. The previous disputes all turned into respect for the technology.


装置开车前夕,技术负责人李旭和赵建平日夜坚守在现场。赵建平带队完成了150余批次中试。后处理车间闷热潮湿,他寸步不离守在机器旁,反复揉搓胶粒,直至手感均匀顺滑才肯罢休。李旭为调节分子量,在DCS控制台前紧盯曲线整整一夜。晨曦初露,调试成功那一刻,他揉着布满血丝的双眼与同事击掌相庆。在此期间,他们的孩子先后出生,两人都只匆匆陪伴了片刻,便又赶回现场继续投入工作。

On the eve of the equipment's startup, technical director Li Xu and Zhao Jianping stayed on site day and night. Zhao Jianping led the team to complete over 150 batches of pilot tests. The post-treatment workshop was humid and stuffy, and he never left the machine, repeatedly kneading the rubber particles until they felt uniform and smooth before he would stop. Li Xu adjusted the molecular weight by closely monitoring the curves on the DCS console for the entire night. As the dawn began to break, upon the successful completion of the debugging, he rubbed his bloodshot eyes and congratulated his colleagues by clapping their hands. During this period, their children were born one after another. Both of them only had a brief moment to accompany their children before rushing back to the site to continue working.


扎根一线35年的陶惠平,始终把“站好最后一班岗”挂在嘴边。装置建设期间,他驻守现场98天,顶着南方酷暑,每日穿行在塔器和管廊之间排查隐患,累计完成整改30余项。

Tao Huiping, who has been working on the front line for 35 years, always keeps the phrase "stand at the last post" on his lips. During the installation process, he stayed at the site for 98 days, enduring the scorching heat in southern China. Every day, he walked between the towers and the pipe racks to check for potential hazards, and a total of 30 rectifications were completed.


2025年11月,石化院溶聚丁苯橡胶团队与独山子石化开车专家、广西石化项目团队通力协作,广西石化装置一次开车成功,“纯中国造”高端橡胶顺利产出。那些咽下的疲惫、错过的陪伴,都化作了北部湾畔的机器轰鸣,这群把“家”安在科研一线的人,用岁月与坚守,书写着科技报国的动人篇章!

In November 2025, the polymerization butyl styrene rubber team of the petrochemical research institute, together with the operation experts from Dushanzi Petrochemical and the project team from Guangxi Petrochemical, worked closely. The Guangxi Petrochemical plant successfully started up for the first time, and high-end rubber "made entirely in China" was successfully produced. All the tiredness swallowed and the missed companionship were transformed into the loud roar of machines on the coast of the Beibu Gulf. These people who have their "home" set up at the forefront of scientific research have written a touching chapter of dedicating their science to the country through time and perseverance!
