Fatiheh Biroul, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and other senior government officials in Canberra today to discuss the major challenges facing the energy market in the Asia-Pacific region due to the war in the Middle East, as well as possible measures to alleviate the pressure on consumers.

Although these consequences are global in nature, the most severe suffering is currently felt in the Asia-Pacific region, which is the destination for the majority of fuel exports from the Middle East.

During the meeting, Dr. Birol thanked Prime Minister Albanez for the measures he has taken so far to ensure fuel security, including supporting the recent actions of the IEA. On March 11th, the IEA member countries agreed to release 400 million barrels of oil from their emergency reserves to alleviate the market pressure caused by the almost complete closure of the strait. This was the largest collective action in history.

In Canberra, Dr. Birol was invited to attend a high-level event at the Great Hall of the Australian Parliament Building along with Prime Minister Albanese. In his speech to government and industry leaders, he emphasized how the International Energy Agency collaborates with countries around the world to support energy security in the face of current major disruptions. Dr. Birol also participated in a fireside chat at the Australian National Press Club.
