Recently, the subsidiary of British energy company Energean, EnEarth, has obtained the permission for its carbon storage project at an exhausted offshore oil field in northern Greece. It is known that the project is named Prinos CO2 and will permanently store carbon dioxide from remote emission sources to support Greece's decarbonization goals.

In late February, the Greek Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company (HEREMA) issued a carbon storage license. This company is the authority in Greece responsible for granting licenses for geological carbon storage. The validity period of this license is 25 years.

HEREMA company stated that the storage site is located in an exhausted oil field and the adjacent saline layer. The carbon dioxide will be stored approximately 3 kilometers below the seabed. It also added that the maximum injection rate allowed in the first phase of the project is 1 million tons per year.

The first phase is expected to be in operation for 20 years.

Kent stated in the press release that the design goal of the Prinos project is to receive and process up to 2.8 million tons of liquid carbon dioxide annually, starting no later than 2029.

The Prinos oil field is located in the northern part of the Aegean Sea, between the island of Samos and the port city of Kavala.

Kent explained that the carbon dioxide emitted by the sources would first be transported to the sea port of an onshore factory near Kavala, where it would be temporarily stored. Then it would be regulated, pumped, and transported through submarine pipelines to the independent carbon dioxide injection and water production platform within the existing Prinos complex.

The company stated that during the FEED stage, the technical scope and execution strategy of the project will be determined to ensure the achievement of the highest safety, efficiency and sustainability standards.
